Mercadona Abrera: WITRON OPM also for fresh goods area

The success story between Mercadona and WITRON has reached another milestone. After the leading Spanish food retailer opted for WITRON's OPM technology for its frozen goods warehouse in Abrera (Barcelona) at the end of 2012, WITRON Logistik + Informatik GmbH from Parkstein was also awarded the order (end of April 2013) to implement OPM in the fresh goods area (+ 3 degrees Celsius, + 12 degrees Celsius) of the distribution center.

At the beginning of 2015, the 156,000 square foot logistics center for perishable goods will supply Mercadona's stores in Northern Spain with 850 different sausage and dairy products. A total of 18 COM machines will insure the fully automated picking of more than 160,000 cases per day onto store-friendly order pallets. An automated 36-aisle tray warehouse with 162,600 storage locations, as well as an automated 5-aisle pallet warehouse with 5,000 storage locations used as a reserve warehouse able to pick half pallets store-friendly directly onto Euro pallets, are located in front of the picking areas.

As a general contractor, WITRON is responsible for the entire design and realization of all IT, control engineering, and mechanical components. All conveyor system elements will be designed and produced by WITRON's subsidiary, FAS. The system will work 24 hours a day, 6 days a week. The on-site service will be carried out by Mercadona's own employees.

Once system ramp-up is complete, Mercadona will have a total of 135 COM machines in use at their sites in Ciempozuelos (Madrid), Ribarroja de Turia (Valencia), Villadangos del Páramo (León), and Abrera (Barcelona) in the dry goods, perishable goods, and frozen goods areas.

Mercadona employs 74,000 people, operates 1,411 stores, and is currently considered the fastest growing company in Spain. In 2012, the owner-run trade company, headquartered in Valencia, generated revenue of 19,077 billion Euros. Mercadona's market share in the Spanish food retail market amounts to approx. 23%.
